Boron Nitride Lubricant

Boron nitride (BN) is a crystalline material. It has two different crystal forms, hexagonal and cubic. The hexagonal form is softer than diamond and exhibits superior stability.

H-BN is a promising material for lubricant applications. This lubricant has high thermal conductivity, chemical stability, and good anti-wear properties. It also has good water resistance. However, the use of BN is still limited.

The boron nitride lubricant can be used for oil-free bearings, metal wire drawing lubricants, and self-lubricating powder metallurgy products. Moreover, BN can be used as release agent for sheet glass processing.

In addition, BN is relatively stable to organic solvents. This is helpful in the formulation of lubricant oils. It can be applied in various industries such as automobile manufacturing, sheet glass processing, and other manufacturing processes. Besides, BN lubricants are non-corrosive and have strong load capacity. With the development of environmental issues globally, lubricant materials that have good environmental performance are in demand.

In the 1990s, researchers tested h-BN as a lubricant additive. They found that BN was better than MoS2 but inferior to graphite. BN’s lubricating mechanism is similar to that of graphite. But it is not suitable for lubrication in dirty environments.

Today, BN has undergone a series of studies to evaluate its suitability as a lubricant. These studies have helped to develop a better understanding of the lubricant’s properties and the effect of h-BN. Currently, h-BN has four varieties.

BN’s tribological properties have been shown to improve with the addition of h-BN. Specifically, the coefficient of friction was reduced from 0.3 to 0.4 to 0.1.

    Molybdenum – This natural mineral has been used to enhance the lubricity for mechanical parts over many centuries. It acts as an antiwear layer by drawing itself onto the metal surface. If the additive cannot dissolve in oil, it will be ineffective. You will need a suitable oil lubricant in order to prevent it from clogging filters and passageways.

    Molly grease may be found in nearly every part of heavy-duty vehicles. To prevent internal gearing from bind, U-joint manufacturers specify that grease should contain no more than 5% of molybdenum sulfide. Moly grease used on slack adjustment may reduce the equipment’s performance.

    Molybdenum grease a type lubricant with low friction but high pressure-absorption capability is one example. It has stick-slip protection and anti-corrosion. Moly grease can be used to press-fit all types of machine components. Moly grease can also be used to prevent gear pitting. This grease can be used to lubricate metal-to–metal contacts and machine parts. It is also useful for the lubrication of threaded and roller bearings.

    Molybdenum sulfide also makes a great lubricant. It’s a mixture of molybdenum, sulfur atoms. Through its sulfur atoms, this compound can bind to metal surfaces. Therefore, it prevents any asperities from touching the metal surfaces. MoS2 is another popular molybdenum grease. It has particles sizes from 1 to 100 um. The sliding friction properties of MoS2 are low at 0.1% to 0.1 s.
