Beryllium nitride (Be3N2) is prepared by heating beryllium metal powder with dry nitrogen in an oxygen-free atmosphere at temperatures between 700 and 1400 degC. It is used in refractory ceramics and nuclear reactors as well as in the production of radioactive carbon-14 for tracer applications.
Reactivity: It rapidly oxidizes in air at 600 degC and is decomposed by water. It reacts with acids and bases to give soluble beryllium compounds and ammonia.
Chemical stability: Stable under recommended storage conditions. Likely routes of exposure: Inhalation, skin and eyes
Symptoms of Exposure: May cause severe irritation to the eyes and respiratory tract. Ingestion can lead to nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
