Molybdenum Silicide

molybdenum silicide (MoSi2) is an intermetallic compound with moderate density and melting point of 2030 degC. It is electrically conductive and forms a passivation layer of silicon dioxide at high temperatures, which prevents further oxidation. It also exhibits good corrosion resistance and high toughness. The combination of these properties make MoSi2 an attractive material for use in electric furnaces used in laboratories and production environment in glass, steel, electronics and ceramics industries.

MoSi2 is gray square crystal powder insoluble in common mineral acids including aqua regia but soluble in mixture acid of nitric and hydrofluoric acid. The atomic radius of Mo and Si is comparable and their electronegativities are similar, resulting in close electronic interactions. It is also stable at high temperatures.

A new method for forming metal silicides on gated polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) field emission cathodes has been developed. The Mo silicide coatings show superior performance compared to pure poly-Si emitters in both field emission current and stability.

The formation of the protective layer is highly dependent on the technology and environmental conditions. Chemical reactions of the metal components in contact with MoSi2 produce silicides and can lead to a gradual degradation of the protective coating. Besides the reaction with molten metals, the presence of gaseous noble gases (argon, nitrogen) disturbs the chemical equilibrium and accelerates the degradation of the MoSi2 layer. In addition, vapors of dust particles from molten metals react with the protective layer. For these reasons, the performance of a MoSi2 protective coating is limited in applications requiring high temperatures.

What is molybdenum silicide and its properties?

What is molybdenum Silicide? Molybdenum Silicide This gray metallic solid is a compound inorganic with the formula MoSi2. It is insoluble, except in nitric or hydrofluoric acid. The two atoms have similar radii, an electronegativity that is not too far apart, and properties that are close to those of ceramics and metals. It is electrically conductible and forms an oxidation-resistant silica passivation film on the surface of molybdenum silicide at high temperatures. It can be used for high-temperature coatings, electric heating components, integrated electrode film, structural materials and as reinforcing agent for composite materials.

Molybdenum Silicide: Physicochemical Properties
MoSi2 (also known as Dalton type intermetallic compound) is the intermediate phase in the MoSi binary alloy with the highest silicon contents. It has the characteristics both of metal and a ceramic, and it is a material with high temperatures and excellent performance. It has a good high-temperature resistance to oxidation, with an oxidation temperature above 1600 that is comparable to SiC. It also has a moderate density (6.24g/cm3), a low coefficient of thermal contraction (8.1×10-6K-1), good electrical and thermal conduction, and brittle transition temperatures (1000) just below ceramic-like hardness. MoSi can be used as an anti-oxidation coating for high temperatures, high temperature structural materials, integrated circuits, and heating elements.
MoSi2 has molybdenum bonded to the silicon by metallic bond, while silicon is covalently bound to the silicon. It is insoluble with mineral acids, including aqua regia. However, it is soluble with a mixture containing nitric and hydrofluoric acids.
In an oxidizing environment, dense quartz glass (SiO2) is formed on the surface of the molybdenum silicide to protect it from continuous oxidation. When the temperature of heating element is greater than 1700 degrees, SiO2 protective films are formed, thickening up to 1710 melting points, and SiO2 fusion as molten drops. Surface extension causes the loss of protective capability. It is possible to form a protective layer again when an element is used continuously with an oxidizing substance. Due to strong oxidation, the element can’t be used at temperatures between 400 and 700degC for a prolonged period of time.

Applications of molybdenum Silicide
In the following industries, molybdenum silicide is used as a high-temperature coating material, an electric heating element, an integrated electrode film and structural materials. It can also be found in composite materials to reinforce them, in wear-resistant materials or in joining materials.
1) Energy and chemical industries: high-temperature thermocouples and their protective tubes, melting vessel vessels (for melting sodium and lithium, bismuth and tin), high-temperature thermocouples and gas burners.
2) Microelectronics Industry: MoSi2 & other refractory metallic silicides (Ti5Si3, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TiSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSi2, TaSI2, etc.) These films are ideal for interconnecting lines and large-scale circuit gates.
Aerospace industry (3): This material has been extensively and deeply investigated and used for high temperature anti-oxidation coatings. Specially for turbine engine parts, including blades, impellers combustors tailpipes and sealing devices.
Automotive industry: turbocharger supercharger rotors and valve bodies for automobiles.

The Applications of Molybdenum Silicide

What is it? Molybdenum Silicide ? Molybdenum Disilicide is an organic compound that has the chemical composition MoSi2. It is a grey metallic solid. Although insoluble in most acids it is soluble in hydrofluoric acid and nitric. The radii of these two atoms do not differ much, and their electronegativities are very close. They also have properties that are similar to metals and ceramics. Molybdenum Disilicide can be used as an electrically conducting material. A passivation layer made of silicon dioxide can also be created on the surface at high temperatures to prevent further oxidation. It is used to make high-temperature antioxidation coating materials, integrated electrode film, structural materials and reinforcing agents in composite materials.
Molybdenum Siicide:
MoSi2 (intermediate phase) is the most silicon-rich in the MoSi binary alloy system. It’s a Dalton type intermetallic compound of fixed composition. This high-temperature material has great performance because of its dual properties of ceramics as well as metal. Excellent high temperature resistance to oxidation, it has a oxidation resistant temperature of 1600. This is equivalent in SiC. It also has a moderate density (6.24g/cm3), low thermal expansion coefficient (8.10-6K-1), good electrical conductivity, high brittle-ductile temperature (1000), which is below ceramic-like hardbrittleness. It is soft and plastic-like metal above 1000. MoSi can be used in integrated circuits, heating elements and high temperature antioxidation coatings.
MoSi2 consists of silicon and molybdenum bonded with metal bonds. In MoSi2, silicon and silicon are also bonded via covalent bonds. Molybdenum Disilicide is a gray tetragonal crystalline. It is insoluble within common mineral acids (including aqua regia), however, it is easily soluble in mixed acids nitric acid or hydrofluoric acid. It can be used to heat elements in high-temperature (1700) environments due to its high resistance to high-temperature oxygenation.
An oxidizing atmosphere forms a protective layer on the surface dense quartz glass (SiO2) that has been heated to high temperatures. This prevents continuous oxidation. SiO2 fused to form protective films when temperatures exceed 1700degC. It loses its protective power due to the act of expanding its surface. The oxidant acts on the element and forms a protective film. This element can not be used for prolonged periods in temperatures between 400 and 700 degrees C due to its strong oxidation at low temperatures.
