Sodium Methoxide Density

sodium methoxide density is an important factor for the manufacture of chemical compounds and is widely used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. It is also employed as a base in dehydrohalogenations and aldol condensations, and serves as a nucleophile for the production of methyl ethers. This strong base is highly soluble in alcohol and methanol, but is insoluble in water, acids and chlorinated solvents. Sodium methoxide is very unstable and reacts violently with water to form methanol and sodium hydroxide. It is very hygroscopic and decomposes rapidly under normal conditions, but can be stabilized by exclusion of air and moisture. It is highly flammable and emits toxic, caustic and corrosive vapors on ignition. It is extremely irritant on contact with skin, eyes and lungs, and can cause lung oedema when inhaled in high concentrations.

Despite being a highly caustic and dangerously reactive compound, sodium methoxide is used extensively in industrial applications. The reactivity of this strong base makes it a valuable tool in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and other chemical compounds. It is also a key component in the biodiesel industry, serving as a catalyst during the production of renewable diesel fuel from fatty acid triglycerides.
