aluminum diboride is an aluminum-boron compound with the chemical formula AlB2. It is a black, glossy monoclinic solid. It is insoluble in cold water, acid and alkali, but decomposes in hot hydrochloric or nitric acid. aluminum diboride is a hazardous substance because it reacts with acids to produce toxic gasses, such as borane and aluminum chloride.

The crystal structure of AlB2 consists of graphite-like layers of boron atoms separated by aluminum atoms. This makes it an interesting material for systematic studies of crystal chemical and physical properties by experimental and theoretical methods.

Borides are hard, high-melting materials that exhibit metal-like conductivity. They are stable to non-oxidizing acids but break down in strong oxidizing agents and alkalis. They are used in superconductors, semiconductors, diamagnetic, paramagnetic, ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic alloys, and turbine blades and rocket nozzles.

Aluminium diboride is a complex crystalline substance, with a high melting point and very low boiling point. It is also a very strong and brittle material with good wear resistance, fracture toughness, and corrosion resistance. It is also an excellent insulator with a very low coefficient of thermal expansion.
