Is Inconel Stronger Than Steel?

What is Inconel718 ? Inconel718 is an nickel-based superalloy. IN718 has a unique alloy composition that gives it good comprehensive properties. This includes high strength, creep resistance, fatigue resistance, and excellent oxidation resistivity, especially at 650 degrees.

Many components of modern aeroengines are made from IN718, including turbine discs.
In718 is also suitable for use in the nuclear reactor (heat exchanging pipe), sub (propeller blades, quick disengage device, auxiliary propel motor), chemical (vessels), pumps, valves pipe), power (industrialgas turbine), the oil & gas industry (underground pipes, wellhead hardware and torch arm).

Is Inconel Stronger Than Steel?
Each type of stainless steel is different. Different stainless steel varieties have different tensile strength, operating temperatures and resistance to certain corrosion agents. For example, grade316 stainless steel is more resistant to chloride than 304 stainless and has a higher average price.

The tensile strengths of metals can be affected by certain handling and molding procedures. The Inconel 625 “rolled”, tensile strength is 120-160 ksi (827-1103MPa), while the Inconel 625″ solution treated bar is 103-130ksi (714-896MPa).
Both tensile strengths classes are presented in ranges and not in particular numbers. This is because the strength can vary depending on the composition of the ingredients. Even small changes in iron, carbon or nickel content can greatly alter the final product’s strength.

Inconel625 has higher tensile strengths than class 304 stainless and can maintain that strength at higher operating temperatures.

Additionally, Inconel’s melting point is lower than that 304 stainless steel. However, it has a lower operating temperature limit. Inconel is stronger at high temperatures than stainless steel and more resistant to scaling and oxidation.

However, stainless is more resistant than Inconel to some chemicals such as sulfuric acids. It is up to the application that you choose which of these metal alloys.

Inconel alloys are more suitable for heat treatment and other high-temperature processes. The same goes for stainless steel alloys, which are often suitable for aseptic manufacturing and medical applications (or any other application that involves corrosion).

Inconel 625 Alloy Properties
Extraordinary material strength
Inconel 625 has a strength that is due not only to the NiCr matrix, but also the hardening mechanism between niobium & molybdenum. The interaction between niobium, molybdenum makes the alloy matrix stronger and offers high strength without precipitation. The alloy has a yield strength of 690 MPa and a tensile resistance of 275 MPa.
High temperature resistance
The Inconel 625 has an approximate melting point of 1300degC, and a thermal extension coefficient of 1.28×10-5/K (at 20degC). It is highly resistant to extreme temperatures from very low to very high.
Inconel 625 is formed naturally by a protective layer when it is treated with an oxidizer at high temperatures. The titanium and the niobium elements of the oxide film on Inconel 625 are dramatically increased in presence of an oxidizer at very high temperature.
The corrosion resistance
Inconel 625 is extremely resistant to corrosive substances due to the unique combination it contains. This is why the superalloy performs well in salty water, particularly in milder environments like freshwater.
Nickel-chromium’s nickel-chromium substrate protects Inconel 625 from oxidants. The material is also protected from pitting by molybdenum. 15% sulfuric acid has a min. Material corrosion occurs at 0.188mm per annum in 15% sulfuric acid.
High production capability
Inconel 625 was developed to be more weldable than other alloys. There are no signs of cracking after welding, and it is resistant to heat and strain. This superalloy is excellent for welding pipe, piping and other equipment.

Why does Inconel cost so much?

Inconel is an aerospace-, chemical processing, offshore and energy industry favorite. The alloy’s strength, corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance makes it ideal for numerous applications. INCONEL’s drawback is its difficulty in working with. A skilled machinist is required to cut the metal. Special CNC cutting tools are required for this metal. The outer layer of the Inconel alloy can harden too rapidly, which causes it to become deformed.

Inconel costs more than any other alloy made of stainless steel and monel because it has a high nickel/chromium level. Due to its cost, Inconel is limited in use within the oil-and gas industry. But, it’s widely used in natural-gas production processes, such as line steel transfer pipe.
Inconel’s diffuser case is one application. Diffuser is the area that will experience the most pressure during combustion. Inconel was developed to eliminate cracking in the casings of the old alloy. It can be used for boilers as well as ferrules. This alloy is not only resistant to high temperatures, but also resists oxidising acids.

In the nuclear industry, Inconel alloy can also be used. Inconel alloy has high strength and resistance to oxidation making it ideal in high-pressure environments. It’s a common choice for many industrial components. It is used in aviation and marine applications.
